【摘要】:Thispracticeprovidesameansofmeasuringthesusceptibilityofanavianspeciestoatestsubstanceinitsdietundercontrolledconditions.TheLC50obtainedinthistestisaconditionalmeasureofsubacutetoxicitybecauseconsumptionisvoluntary,andbecausethedietaryroutemayintroducemetabolictransformationsofthetestsubstancethatmightbeabsentinotherexposuretechniques.Useofthispracticecontributestotheevaluationofthehazardsofchemicalstobirdsbecauseexposureisanalogoustomostfieldexposures,thatis,throughdietaryintake.Theuseofthispracticeallowsforobservationofsignsoftoxicityinadditiontomortality.Thedose-responsecurveprovidesadditionalinformationabouttheresponseofbirdstoatestsubstance.Thispracticecanbeusedtostudytheeffectsoftestsubstancesincombinationinordertosimulatesituationswherebirdsmaybeexposedtomorethanonesubstancesimultaneously(1).3Thispracticeprovidesonebasisfordecidingwhetheradditionaltoxicitytestingshouldbeconductedwithbirds.1.1Thispracticedescribesaprocedurefordeterminingthesubacutedietarytoxicityofatestsubstanceadministeredtobirdsintheirdailydiet.TheLC50valuetimetomortalityandslopeofthedoseresponsecurvemayalsobederived.1.2Thispracticeisapplicabletosubstancesthatcanbemixeduniformlyintothediet.1.3Thispracticeisintendedprimarilytobeusedwiththeyoungofthefollowingspecies:northernbobwhite(Colinusvirginianus),Japanesequail(Coturnixjaponica),mallard(Anasplatyrhynchos),andring-neckedpheasant(Phasianuscolchicus).Otherspeciesoragegroups,forexample,withwild-trappedbirds,maybeusedwithappropriatehusbandrymodificationstothepractice.1.4Thisstandardisusedroutinelytoaddressavianregulatorytestingrequirements.Modificationstotheproceduresdescribedinthisstandardhavebeenproposedandarebeingevaluatedtobetteraddresstheneedsofthelatestriskassessmentprocedures.Specifically,thelatestprocedurescallforindividualbirdfeedconsumptionmeasurementssothatamoreprecisedosecanbedetermined.Whilesuchproceduresmayreplaceproceduresdescribedinthecurrentstandard,thereisnocertaintythatthenewestprocedureswillworkasanticipated,andthecompletionofvalidationisnotcomplete.Therefore,thecurrentguidelinehasutilitypriortovalidationandacceptanceofamodifiedstandard.Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.ForspecificprecautionarystatementsseeSection6.
